From Teen Mom to Dr.

So some of u may know, some may not but this is my story and I am not ashamed. It’s no secret that I was a teenage mom, never tried to hide it, hey, shit happens. Many of you were probably having sex as teenagers but just never got pregnant, so hey don’t judge me. Moreso, some of you probably did get pregnant but decided to have an abortion so you can’t judge me either with your skeletons in your closet. Yeah I know I probably stepped on some toes with that one but hey, it is what it is…

Moving right along, so like I was saying, I was a teenage mom and I became a teenage mother in the 11th grade at age 16. Now, 27 yrs later (yes I have a 27 yr old son, I know it’s hard for me to believe it too lol) I have beat the odds, against all odds. It wasn’t easy being a teenage mother and many people counted me out before the race even began. But with the support of my mom, I did it. Statistics shows that over 50% of teen moms drop out of high school. I was determined that I wasn’t going to be in that number.

But look at me now, not only did I graduate high school with my class, I went on to college to receive a Bachelors degree, Masters degree, and also a Postgraduate degree. Yes, you heard me correctly, I have a PhD. That’s right, let me share with you another statistic. Only 1% of Americans have a Doctoral degree. Now that is one number that I am proud to be amongst. I am a living testimony that hard work and determination pays off.

Don’t let anything or anyone stand in the way of you achieving your dreams and reaching your goals. And as for the “naysayers” standing on the sidelines judging you, pray for them. I am here to let you know that if I can do it, you can too. I am a living testimony. Remember it’s not where you’re from but where you’re going, it’s not how you start but how you finish.

“Never stop fighting until you arrive at your destined place – that is, the unique you. Have an aim in life, continuously acquire knowledge, work hard, and have perseverance to realise the great life.” — A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
